What is bead blasting?

Bead blasting is a metal cleaning process that creates a clean, bright, uniform matte texture. Glass beads are literally blasted at a surface using low air pressure, hence the name bead blasting! Using the bead blasting process, a surface can be transformed without any damage. Paint, rust and corrosion are removed whilst at the same time the metal itself is strengthened – it’s why bead blasting is used in practically every industry across the world.

Although practically any surface can be bead blasted, here at Blastworks we work exclusively with stainless steel and aluminium to prevent any potential contamination to your metals.

When it comes to blasting there are a wide variety of abrasives to choose from. Glass bead blasting produces a much smoother and brighter finish than angular abrasives. There is no dimensional change to the metal surface, no embedded contaminates or residue left behind and the process smooths away any surface defects. Glass bead blasting can also improve corrosion resistance.

Why bead blast?

Remove oxidation and return weathered looking parts to pristine condition without damage.

Scratches and imperfections erased.

Welding and heat discolouration removed.

Eliminate porosity in hygienic products to lessen the risk of bacteria residing.

Ultimately creating an overall, long lasting, even finish.

Is bead blasting for me?

Bead blasting is a quick and easy process that can save you a lot of time and effort.

For instance, at Blastworks we regularly bead blast rather large stainless steel food manufacturing weighing scale structures for a local customer. Not only do they use us for our high quality work, but also the fact we only work with stainless steel and aluminium gives them the confidence that cross contamination is eliminated - perfect for the food industry these scales are used in. Another example of work we recently did was a one off bead blast of a set of aluminium wheel rims. It took under an hour to bead blast all four wheel rims The customer was delighted, as it would have taken him hours of elbow grease to prep them himself!
